A man from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested by Gujarat’s Anti‑Terrorism Squad (ATS) in a case that officials tie to the Islamic State (ISIS). The suspect, known as Azad, lives in Jhinjhana town in the Shamli district.
Azad is one of three men detained on Sunday by the Gujarat ATS. The other two, Ahmed Mohiuddin Syed and Mohammad Suhel, were watched for nearly a year. Authorities say the trio tried to smuggle weapons and were taken into custody when they were caught in the act.
Family voices doubt
Azad’s family says they know nothing about any terrorist plot. His brother, Shahzad, told that Azad had been in Budhana, a neighboring district in Muzaffarnagar, just three days before his arrest. “I called the Gujarat ATS and they said they would reach him in a few hours. Since then, I’ve had no contact,” he said. Shahzad added that no criminal record exists against his brother. He wants a fair investigation and, if Azad is innocent, a quick release.
Azad’s mother, Farmida, described him as a hardworking labourer who also studied and later taught at a madrasa in Budhana. “He left home around November 6 or 7 to bring his niece home. He never returned. He used to go to the madrasa on Thursdays and come back home on Saturdays,” she told .
A local social worker, Maulana Irshad, who knows the family, said Azad was a sincere young man who supported his family. He also talked about his small businesses and plans to open a shop on a vacant plot. “If he did something wrong, the government should act. If he’s innocent, he deserves proper justice,” Irshad added.

The Gujarat ATS has not yet revealed specific details about Azad’s alleged role with an ISIS-linked network. Investigators are still working on the case, and more information may emerge as the probe continues.
