The US and India are navigating some rocky patches in their key alliance, thanks to mixed messages coming out of Washington. A top State Department official admits there’s turbulence, but insists the relationship is still heading in a strong, positive direction—even with President Donald Trump’s open frustrations.
Trump doesn’t hold back when he’s annoyed with other countries, often venting on Truth Social. “This is one of the most transparent administrations in history,” the official said, highlighting Trump’s straightforward style on social media. Still, the US sees India as a solid friend and a vital partner for the future.
Both sides keep the momentum going with frequent top-level talks. Secretary of State Marco Rubio kicked off his role by meeting the Quad group— the US, India, Japan, and Australia—then jumped straight into one-on-one discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made an early White House visit, chatting with Trump in the Oval Office just two weeks after the inauguration.
“Step back from this short-term noise, and the US-India relationship is really growing,” the official added.
Trade spats and energy issues are fueling the current friction. The Trump team has slapped extra tariffs on India over business disagreements. They’re also pushing New Delhi to cut back on Russian oil buys, aiming to squeeze Moscow’s war chest amid the Ukraine conflict.
During Jaishankar’s meeting with Rubio in New York on September 22, 2025, on the edges of the UN General Assembly, Russian oil came up again. “We’ve discussed it in every engagement,” the official said. “Rubio’s been direct with European allies and with India.” No big promises emerged from the talks, but the US keeps raising the point in diplomacy.
On a brighter note, Trump and Modi’s personal bond seems rock-solid. They shared a “really positive” phone call last week to mark Modi’s 75th birthday. The White House is also set to nominate Sergio Gor, one of Trump’s closest aides, as the new US ambassador to India—a clear sign of how much they value these ties.
Looking ahead, more Trump-Modi meetings are on the horizon. “I’m sure you’ll see them get together—they have a great rapport,” the official noted. A Quad Summit with the four partners could happen later this year or early 2026.
US-India relations face these ups and downs as they juggle big strategic goals with thorny policy clashes. Trump’s blunt approach adds some heat, but the steady stream of high-level meetups shows Washington isn’t letting disputes derail this crucial partnership.
