Shocking Beheading of Indian Immigrant Sparks Outrage in US
A horrific murder in Dallas has left the Indian American community reeling. Chandra Nagamallaiah, a 50-year-old hardworking immigrant from India, was brutally beheaded at his workplace, right in front of his wife and son. The shocking incident has drawn sharp criticism from US Congressman Ro Khanna, who called it a tragedy that could have been prevented.
Khanna took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his anger. "The brutal beheading of a hardworking Indian American immigrant in front of his wife and son is horrific," he wrote. He pointed out that the killer, an undocumented migrant with a history of violent crimes, should never have been walking free. "The murderer had multiple prior arrests for violent theft & child endangerment and was undocumented. He should not have been free on American streets."
The attack happened early Wednesday morning outside the Downtown Suites motel in East Dallas. According to Dallas Police, 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, a Cuban migrant, chased Nagamallaiah with a machete, struck him several times, and then decapitated him. Witnesses described a gruesome scene: Cobos-Martinez, covered in blood and still holding the weapon, even kicked the victim’s head like a soccer ball. Both men worked at the motel, and the suspect lived there too.
Police arrested Cobos-Martinez on the spot. He’s now locked up at Dallas County Jail, facing capital murder charges. In a recorded interview, he confessed to the killing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) helped with the interrogation and revealed more disturbing details. ICE said Cobos-Martinez had been detained at the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Anson until January 13 this year. They released him under supervision because no flights were available to deport him back to Cuba. Tragically, he had a record of arrests for theft and endangering a child.
The Indian Consulate General in Houston confirmed Nagamallaiah’s death and expressed deep condolences. "We condole the tragic death of Mr. Chandra Nagamallaiah, an Indian national killed brutally at his workplace in Dallas, Texas," they said in a statement. The consulate is staying in close touch with the family, offering all possible help, and monitoring the case with Dallas Police.
News outlets like WFAA and CBS reported the eyewitness accounts that have horrified locals. One witness told CBS the suspect sneaked up from behind and chopped off the head. Neighbors called the scene "sick and disturbing," with police responding quickly to reports of a stabbing.
This brutal beheading of an Indian immigrant has ignited widespread fury among Indian Americans across the US. Many are demanding better border security and justice for victims like Nagamallaiah, who came to America chasing the dream of a better life. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the grieving family and ensuring the killer faces the full force of the law.
