Florida man with doormat reading ‘come back with a warrant’ arrested in large-scale fraud scheme

A Florida resident was taken into custody on Tuesday for a sprawling mortgage‑fraud operation after a local sheriff honored his quirky request for a “come back with a warrant” doormat. Christopher Musick, 57, allegedly masqueraded as a “fake real estate investor” in Volusia County, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The sheriff’s office even posted a photo of Musick’s front step, where the doormat displayed his bold invitation for a warrant. “We came back with a warrant,” the office confirmed.
After talking with Musick, detectives from the VSO Financial Crimes Unit found enough probable cause to carry out a search of his Daytona Beach home, thereby fulfilling the doormat’s demand. According to the release, Musick forged deceptive documents and pretended to own several commercial properties in the county. He obtained mortgages on those assets, used the proceeds to buy more real estate, and then rented the properties. The money he collected from tenant rents was kept by Musick, while the loans were never repaid.
Musick, who has 10 prior convictions and two pending warrants in Maryland, was seized and charged with running an organized scheme to defraud, committing grand theft over $100,000, and forgery. He is currently being held with a bond of $225,000, according to Volusia County Corrections’ inmate records.
Florida, known for its colorful characters and unusual crimes, offered more unsettling headlines over the past months. In early November, a local known as “Farmer Pete” was arrested after a confrontation that escalated into a shooting when a disagreement over how many eggs a chicken could lay turned violent. In October, a repeat offender was charged with drug possession, but investigators also discovered a thermos hidden inside his rectum, necessitating surgical removal.
