US President Donald Trump has revealed he’s set to chat with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday to hammer out a deal on TikTok’s future. The two leaders are getting close to an agreement that could keep the hugely popular social media app running in the US, Trump shared during a press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“We’re talking to President Xi on Friday to see if we can wrap up something on TikTok,” Trump said. He praised the app’s massive value and admitted he doesn’t want to let it slip away, even though he personally likes TikTok. Trump even credited it for boosting his past election campaign, noting how it helped him connect with young voters like never before. “It helped get me elected. We did unbelievably well with youth—at a level no Republican has ever dreamed of,” he added.
Trump stressed that the US holds all the cards when it comes to TikTok’s operations in America. “TikTok has tremendous value. The United States has that value in its hand because we’re the ones who have to approve it. I specifically get the right to approve it,” he explained. He pointed out that top global investors—the biggest and richest—are jumping in to make this work, teaming up with China to ensure success.
The deal promises big financial wins for the US too. “The United States is getting a tremendous fee-plus—for just making the deal. I don’t want to throw that out the window,” Trump said, calling it a smart move.
He also highlighted TikTok’s pull with young people, warning that banning it could upset a key group of voters. “You’ll have a lot of very unhappy youth,” Trump noted. He shared how he uses the app himself for quick, straightforward messages. “I use TikTok very legitimately—just statements. Every day, little statements, short statements. And TikTok Jack, we call him. He was pretty good. Did a good job for me.”
Under the potential agreement, TikTok would be fully owned by American investors—top companies and wealthy backers who truly love the country. “It’ll be owned by all American investors, and the best investors and very rich people and companies are going to be owning it. Very straight, very legitimate,” Trump assured.
Describing the scale, Trump called it a “big thing” and said that’s why they’re so close to sealing it. He didn’t rule out extending current US-China trade terms if needed, but only on the solid footing they already have. “We may do an extension with China, but it’s an extension based on the same terms that we have right now, which are pretty good terms.”
This TikTok deal update comes amid ongoing US-China trade talks, with eyes on how it could shape the app’s role in American social media.
