US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 80th session in New York. The gathering took place during the High-Level Week, as world leaders tackle global challenges.
This key Russia-US meeting highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts amid tense relations, especially over the Ukraine conflict. The Russian Foreign Ministry shared details on social media, noting the September 24 discussion.
The UNGA’s annual General Debate is in full swing right now. On the second day, leaders from around the world stepped up to the podium. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a powerful speech, urging action against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy painted a stark picture: “Many nations here are at war, just out of war, or gearing up for one.” He called on the assembly to decide Russia’s fate in Ukraine and end the aggression. He mentioned a positive meeting with President Trump the day before and talks with other leaders, stressing that unity could make a real difference.
The Ukrainian leader thanked supporters but pushed for more. “G7 and G20 matter, but it all comes down to the United Nations and every member,” he said. Zelenskyy urged everyone not to stay silent: “Speak out, condemn Russia, and join us in defending lives, international law, and order. People are waiting for action.”
He didn’t hold back on frustrations with the UN Security Council, where Russia has a permanent seat and veto power. “International law only works if you have powerful friends ready to fight for it,” Zelenskyy noted. Russia has used its veto repeatedly to block Ukraine-related resolutions and aid for Sudan’s humanitarian crisis—more than any other permanent member, including during Soviet times.
Other speakers that day included Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Argentina’s President Javier Milei, and Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. Al-Sharaa’s address marked a milestone—the first time in nearly 60 years a Syrian leader spoke at the UNGA.
As the UNGA 80 session continues, these talks underscore the push for peace in Ukraine and reforms to global institutions like the Security Council.
