A shocking attack shook Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday when a 40-year-old man from nearby Burton crashed his car into a church, opened fire on worshippers, and set the building ablaze. The violence at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints left at least two people dead and several others injured, including children, according to reports from CNN.
The incident unfolded during a crowded service. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye explained that the gunman, armed with an assault rifle, targeted people inside the church after driving into the building. He stepped out of his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the congregation.
Two officers quickly engaged the suspect in a shootout and killed him on the spot. “We believe we have the guy who did this, and he’s the only one involved,” Renye said. At least eight people suffered gunshot wounds, with some in critical condition. Rescuers rushed victims to local hospitals, and officials worry more injuries could emerge once they fully secure the fire-ravaged structure.
The fire appeared intentional, started by the suspect himself. “We’re still figuring out exactly when and where it began,” Renye noted. “We think more people got trapped near the flames and couldn’t escape.” The motive for this Michigan church shooting remains a mystery, but investigators are digging deep. They plan to search the suspect’s home with a warrant and review his cell phone records for clues.
The FBI stepped in with about 100 agents to interview witnesses and support the local team. Meanwhile, a bomb squad checked out a suspicious item on church grounds, a source told CNN.
This tragic event hit hard for the Latter-day Saints community, coming right as they mourned the death of their president, Russell M. Nelson. The 101-year-old leader, the oldest ever to head the church, passed away the night before. He had guided the organization since 2018. As the investigation into the Grand Blanc church attack continues, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
