US Vetoes UN Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire Amid Israel’s Intensifying Attacks
The United States has once again stirred controversy at the United Nations by vetoing a key resolution that demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This move happened on Thursday, just as Israel ramped up its military operations in Gaza City, leaving many wondering about the path to peace in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The resolution, put forward by the 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, won support from 14 out of 15 members. It urged all sides to honor an unconditional ceasefire right away, free all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, and lift barriers to humanitarian aid flowing into Gaza. But the US stood alone in blocking it, highlighting deep divisions in global efforts to end the violence.
US Deputy Special Envoy to the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, explained the veto without mincing words. She said it shouldn’t surprise anyone, as the resolution skipped any condemnation of Hamas and ignored Israel’s right to self-defense. Ortagus also slammed it for boosting "false narratives" that favor Hamas, which she claims have gained traction in the Council.
The decision sparked immediate backlash from Palestinian and Arab voices. Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour hit out hard, arguing that the veto undermines the UN Security Council’s credibility and authority. He stressed that no one should wield veto power when atrocity crimes are unfolding in Gaza, putting lives at risk.
Algeria’s UN Ambassador, Amar Bendjama, delivered an emotional plea. Addressing Palestinians directly, he said, "Palestinian brothers, Palestinian sisters, forgive us. Forgive us, because the world speaks of rights but denies them to Palestinians. Forgive us because our sincere efforts shattered against this wall of rejection." His words captured the frustration felt by many in the international community.
On the other side, Israel’s Ambassador Danny Danon stood firm. He insisted Israel doesn’t need to justify its Gaza war and thanked the US for the veto, calling it a vital show of support.
This dramatic vote took place on a poignant day—the 80th anniversary of the United Nations’ founding. Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor, James Bays, called the moment "sombre," pointing out how the US’s stance echoes an "America-first" approach. At a time when many nations push for multilateral diplomacy to solve global crises like the Gaza humanitarian crisis, this veto underscores ongoing tensions in UN Gaza ceasefire talks.
As the Israel-Palestine conflict drags on, with hostages still captive and aid struggles intensifying, the world watches closely. Will this veto push negotiations further away, or spark new diplomatic pushes? Stay tuned for updates on the latest UN developments and Middle East peace efforts.
