A pair of Las Vegas teenagers, Jesus Ayala (20) and Jzamir Keys (18), have been handed life‑long prison terms after they deliberately drove a stolen car into retired California police chief Andreas “Andy” Probst while he was biking. The 64‑year‑old was killed in August 2023, and the crime was recorded on video – a clip that spread quickly online.
Ayala, who was 17 at the time, received a sentence of 20 years to life, with an extra 2–10 years added for battery. Keys, then 16, was given 18 years to life. Their sentences followed a plea deal that secured the convictions of second‑degree murder and battery, each involving a deadly weapon, for the intentional collision that ended Probst’s life.
During sentencing, Judge Jacqueline Bluth made it clear there was no justification for what the two had done: “There is no excuse for what you two have done and the damage and pain that you have caused.” The defendants, who had stolen the vehicle from which they filmed the attack, did not speak when given the chance to address the court.
The video showed the teens laughing as they discussed their plan; one of them even said, “hit his ass,” before speeding into Probst. Before the final strike, the car struck a 72‑year‑old bicyclist, who survived, then fled and crashed into a Toyota Corolla. The video was widely shared, contributing to the notoriety of their crime.
After Probst’s death, Ayala was arrested a few hours later. While in custody, he told police he expected a short sentence: “You think this juvenile [expletive] is gonna do some [expletive]? I’ll be out in 30 days, I’ll bet you. It’s just ah, [expletive] ah, hit‑and‑run—slap on the wrist.”
Probst’s family spoke to the court in a deeply emotional manner. His widow, Crystal, explained how her husband’s sudden passing tore her world apart, saying, “They stole the future we earned, moment by moment and year by year,” and added that the pain endures and grows.
Her son Michael described the shock as, “The moment I learned of his death, all I could do is scream and yell,” while his sister Taylor lamented the loss of the day she would have watched her father walk her down the aisle and the chance of meeting grandchildren that will never happen.
