Viral ‘door kick’ TikTok trend spirals out of control: teens face felonies, homeowners could fight back

A new TikTok challenge called the “door kick” or “door knock challenge” is turning up in police departments all over the country, from Los Angeles to Florida, as officials warn that the stunt could quickly lead to arrests, shattered doors, and even life‑threatening altercations.

The trend sends teens running up to a stranger’s front door, kicking or slamming it hard, and then scrambling away to post the clip online for social media clout. Police say the activity is already spreading nationwide and the legal and safety consequences are escalating with each incident.

In Florida, three teenagers were arrested in early December after allegedly kicking a homeowner’s door during the trend, prompting local police to issue fresh warnings across the state. Meanwhile, the Manhattan Beach Police Department in Southern California said it had taken a pre‑emptive stance earlier in the summer after a door‑kicking event that echoed the now‑viral challenge. The department noted that a person approached a home in July, struck the front door twice, and fled—causing damage. While no arrest was made and there was no definitive link to TikTok, police used the case to issue public alerts and social‑media warnings, urging parents to discuss the dangers and legal risks with their kids.

“That was the only case that we saw,” Manhattan Beach Police Sergeant Andy Abreu told Patch. “I can’t definitely say these are the TikTok challenge kids, but it was the M.O.”

Abreu explained that the department still issued a warning because the “door kick” trend was gaining traction nationwide, raising concerns that what some teens might see as a harmless prank could quickly turn into property damage, arrests—or worse. He added, “I don’t want some poor mom saying, ‘My kid was just playing a prank,’ and something bad happened to them.”

Police in Atlanta, New Jersey and other cities have issued similar alerts, cautioning that startled homeowners may react out of fear, potentially escalating a prank into a violent confrontation. The South Fulton Police Department in Georgia described the challenge as “dangerous” and warned that it could spiral out of control if residents believe their home is under attack.
