The Union High School football squad, which had been coached by Travis Turner until he went missing during an investigation into child‑sex‑crime allegations, was knocked out of the state championship when the Bears fell to Glenvar in a 21‑20 defeat at Saturday’s semifinal. The team had been undefeated at 13‑0 before that loss, and the close game was reported by WJHL.
Turner disappeared on Nov. 20 as police were driving to his Appalachian home to question him. A search of the rugged terrain followed, and within days the authorities announced that he would face charges of possessing child pornography and soliciting a minor for sex. His lawyers have said the family last saw him walking into the woods with a gun, though the family has denied the allegations. Police have reported no trace of him for more than two weeks.
Despite the storm of headlines, the Bears stayed focused. They captured the regional title in late November and continued to play under interim coach Jason Edwards. A dedicated fan told WJHL, “I mean, you know, the boys, it’s hard for them not to hear a lot of things, you know,” adding that staying focused “tells a lot about them and the community as well.”
Edwards reflected on the season, saying, “They can tell their kids and grandkids about it,” and added that football is a one‑time chance for many, urging everyone to “take the moments from it and always cherish.”
