Wild new cockpit audio reveals moment Alaska Airlines pilot tried to crash plane mid-flight: ‘Just tried to shut our engines off’

The new cockpit recordings and dash‑cam footage give a clearer picture of what happened on Oct. 2023, when former Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson, sitting in a jump seat while off‑duty, tried to shut down the engines of a commercial flight carrying 84 passengers.
In the audio, the panelist can hear Emerson saying, “I’m not ok,” a phrase that came across as deeply distressed. A member of the crew, confused, replies, “What’s wrong? You want to be home?” The conversation quickly turns heated, as Emerson erupts with a string of swearing and a physical struggle begins inside the cockpit of the jet bound for San Francisco.
“He’s talking about the Horizon—we need to make an emergency landing because someone just tried to cut our engines off. We’re heading straight to Portland, now,” the crew reports.
Emerson explained later to authorities that he had consumed psychedelic mushrooms two days before, and he believed he was dreaming when he attempted to sever the plane’s fuel line. Following the incident, he entered a federal plea bargain that resulted in credit for time served and a three‑and‑a‑half‑year supervised release period.
