Five people died and 12 were hurt in a car crash near Kalaw township in Myanmar’s Shan state, local officials say. The wreck, which occurred around 1:20 p.m. local time, happened after the vehicle’s brakes failed and it slid into a roadside ditch.
The driver was heading from Taunggyi to Mandalay, and the 17‑person car carried a mix of men and women. Tragically, two men and three women died, while six men and six women received hospital treatment. Fire service teams and rescue workers rushed to the scene and transported the victims to Kalaw People’s Hospital.
Similar road‑traffic tragedies have struck the region this month. On Nov. 3, a vehicle in Kengtung township overturned – likely due to speeding – killing two men and injuring seven others. In the Magway region, an oil tanker collided head‑on with a light truck on Oct. 22, killing five people and injuring four.
Myanmar’s fire and rescue services are working hard to improve emergency response on the country’s busy roads, and authorities are under pressure to upgrade vehicle safety and road maintenance to prevent future accidents.
