American YouTuber Tyler Oliveira, 25, has sparked a fierce online backlash after filming a “poop‑throwing” festival in a village in Karnataka, India. The clip, which he posted on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption Inside India’s Poop‑Throwing Festival, quickly racked up more than five million views.
The footage shows the little‑known Gorehabba celebration that takes place in Gumatapura after Diwali. Villagers dress in plain clothes, throw dried cow dung at one another, and shout in joy as they honor Beereshwara Swamy—a god believed to have been born from cow manure. For many locals, the ritual is a sacred and purifying tradition, not a gimmick to share on social media.
Oliveira’s post included a picture of him wearing a hazmat suit and face goggles, covered in the brown splatters of the festival. He wrote, “Happy Diwali! I went to India’s poop‑throwing festival. It was the shittiest experience of my life. I will never go back. Please pray that I survive.” A poop emoji completed the message.
Indian social‑media users quickly condemned the video. One X user wrote, “Why do you have to come to India and then record a cow dung festival (as if it’s normal) and then act like a loser?” Others accused Oliveira of spreading racism and misinformation, hinting that the clip might be part of a smear campaign against India. A user claimed that the YouTuber had been hired to tarnish the country’s reputation.
Oliveira replied that the video was being censored after it was reported many times. He insisted the footage is authentic and offered to share a longer version. Still, some skeptics argued the clip could be AI‑generated or fabricated.
The controversy has gone beyond the YouTube comment section. Reddit users and X commentators have debated whether the ritual fairly represents India’s culture or unfairly paints the country in a negative light. One user lamented that “India’s PR got nuked” and that a single village could ruin the image of an entire nation.
So far, Tyler Oliveira has not responded to media requests for comment. The incident highlights the growing tension between travel vloggers, global audiences, and cultural sensitivities in a connected world.
