Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunner in New York City’s mayoral race, faces a new complaint that claims his campaign steered almost $2 million of outside Super PAC spending. The allegations were filed with the city’s Campaign Finance Board (CFB) by Jennifer Brown, a private citizen and former campaign consultant.
Brown says she scoured the CFB’s “Follow the Money” database and found several vendors—Debra Schommer Media Group, Molitico Consulting, LC Media and Bellwether Consulting—that were paid by Mamdani’s team in the same time frame that Super PACs “We the People” and “America for All WFP” spent money. She points out overlapping ZIP‑code targeting and timing that, she argues, show a presumption of coordination, which is forbidden under city law.
The complaint lists only a portion of the overlap. Brown, who also worked on Whitney Tilson’s and Jim Walden’s mayoral campaigns, says more instances may exist and warrants further review by the CFB.
The rules are clear: a candidate’s campaign may not coordinate with Super PACs or independent‑expenditure groups that support them. While the Supreme Court says Super PACs can raise and spend unlimited money, candidates who accept public campaign funds face strict limits on contributions and spending.
Brown emphasized that she filed the complaint as an independent consultant, not linked to any candidate or campaign. Mamdani’s campaign has declined to respond to the story.
Mamdani currently leads the race ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The CFB has yet to comment on the new filing, but it recently fined Cuomo’s campaign $675,000 after finding improper coordination with the pro‑Cuomo Super PAC Fix The City.
The allegations, if found valid, could reshape fundraising and spending rules as the New York City mayoral election approaches.
