Zohran Mamdani transition team raises $3.7M — far outpacing predecessors de Blasio, Adams, with mixed results

Mayor‑Elect Zohran Mamdani’s Transition Fund Surpasses Predecessors with $3.7 Million

City officials confirmed that Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani’s transition committee has gathered more than $3.7 million as the new administration heads toward its January 1 inauguration. The haul far outstrips the money raised by previous mayors before taking office—more than four times Bill de Blasio’s 2014 pre‑inaugural contribution and almost four times Eric Adams’ 2022 total.

According to campaign‑finance filings, the $3.7 million includes contributions from nearly 30,000 donors. A majority of them—just over half—are located outside New York State, and 91 of those supporters donated the maximum $3,700 allowed by state law. In total, 244 donors contributed at that cap; three of them allegedly exceeded the limit, a Post investigation found. The campaign says it has already returned any of those potentially illegal contributions.

Compared to earlier mayors, the numbers illustrate a shift in fundraising strategy. De Blasio’s 2014 transition committee raised only $609,000, while Adams’ 2022 pre‑inaugural haul amounted to $967,000. Mamdani’s committee now dwarfs both figures.

Local support also played a key role. Spokesperson Dora Pekec highlighted that many New Yorkers contributed modest sums—most donated $25 or less—enabling the transition to recruit top staff and plan an inaugural celebration for the city’s residents. “Fueled by grassroots donors with a median donation of just $25, our transition fund makes it possible to recruit top talent and host an inauguration where thousands of New Yorkers can gather to celebrate our shared vision for a new era,” Pekec told the Post.

The committee’s agenda includes a bold Lower Manhattan block party to honor Mamdani’s swearing‑in. The “Inauguration of a New Era” event is slated to draw up to 50,000 participants and will feature a star‑studded line‑up: actors Cynthia Nixon and John Turturro, novelists Min Jin Lee and Colson Whitehead, and children’s performer Ms. Rachel. Mamdani said the celebration will “be a celebration of the movement that made this victory possible, and the beginning of a new dawn for our city.”

While the transition committee still has to release an estimated cost for the inaugural bash, it has pledged that the $3.7 million raised will fund the event entirely. The city’s Campaign Finance Board has yet to record the December contributions, but the figures already show a record‑breaking pre‑inaugural fundraising effort.
