V-P Radhakrishnan stresses character building as foundation of education and national progress

Vice‑President C.P. Radhakrishnan touched down in Kollam on Monday, the first time he visited Kerala after taking office in Delhi. He used the occasion to open the 75‑year‑old diamond jubilee of Fatima Mata National College and to push a fresh message about character building in India’s schools.

Skills and values are “the greatest wealth”

Speaking to faculty, alumni and students, Radhakrishnan quoted Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar: “Education is the greatest wealth a person can possess.” He urged the college’s 1,200‑plus students to combine knowledge with discipline, social responsibility and moral courage. “Man‑making is the most important foundation for creating a great, strong, and compassionate society,” he added. The Vice‑President said that the college’s motto—Per Matrem Pro Patria (Through the Mother for the Fatherland)—continues to inspire generations to live with integrity and purpose.

Celebrating a legacy of community‑built education

Founded in 1951 by Reverend Jerome M. Fernandez, Fatima Mata National College has served as a pillar of education and nation‑building in Kerala. “Building such institutions in post‑Independence India required courage, faith and community spirit rather than wealth,” Radhakrishnan noted. He praised the college as a beacon of knowledge and social responsibility that has been “a temple of wisdom and a lighthouse of values.”

The event was attended by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Union Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi, Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal, and Bishop of Kollam Reverend Paul Antony Mullassery.

Call to fight drugs and use social media wisely

Radhakrishnan also launched a nationwide “No to Drugs” campaign. He said substance abuse “destructs youth and societies alike” and must be tackled together by parents, teachers and students. “A drug‑free lifestyle is crucial for physical health and social harmony,” he emphasized.

On digital media, he warned that while social platforms can connect and empower, “their careless use can mislead, divide, and distract.” He urged students to use social media to promote truth, compassion and national unity.

Looking ahead

The Vice‑President praised Kerala’s progress in education and literacy, crediting pioneers like Reverend Fernandez for setting an example. He expressed hope that the college will celebrate its centenary with its long‑term vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). In closing, he gave his best wishes for the college’s continued contribution to the nation’s educational and moral advancement.

After arriving at Trivandrum International Airport from Delhi, Radhakrishnan travelled to Kollam, spent the night at the Kerala Raj Bhavan, and will next attend an event at the Sree Chithra Institute of Science and Technology before returning to Delhi.
