Hosur Turns Trash into Treasure: Garbage Spots Become Green Zones
In a smart move to clean up the city, the Hosur City Municipal Corporation (HCMC) in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district has kicked off a big project. They’re transforming over 500 garbage dumping spots into beautiful, litter-free green areas. This solid waste management initiative aims to boost urban aesthetics and make Hosur a cleaner, greener place.
Even with door-to-door garbage collection by 587 conservancy workers across 45 wards, some residents still toss waste on street corners and public spots. To tackle this, HCMC launched a beautification drive last week. Corporation Commissioner Mohammad Shabbir Alam picked 50 of these Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) to start with.
Good news: 10 sites are already done! Workers cleared the trash mounds and planted grass and greenery for just Rs 10,000 each. The full plan for all 50 spots will cost around Rs 5 lakh. Now, residents and staff must water and care for these new green patches in their neighborhoods.
"We’ve warned people: no dumping, burning, or burying waste in open areas," said a corporation official. Breaking the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 or Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Rules 2023 could lead to strict penalties. Spot a violation or missed collection? While most households cooperate with the door-to-door service, a few areas lag behind. HCMC is surveying these pockets right now and will roll out a plan soon to hit 100% compliance. They’ve also urged resident welfare associations to rally their members and support the effort.
Early wins are popping up everywhere. Take the spot near RC Church—a former trash heap full of garbage and debris now blooms as a small garden. "It’s way cleaner and safer for walkers, especially after dark," shared a traffic cop nearby.
This green transformation in Hosur isn’t just about looks. HCMC wants to spark civic responsibility and make solid waste management a community habit. With cleaner streets and fresh vibes, the city is on track to shine brighter.
