GST reforms will boost purchasing power and benefit all sectors: Traders

Traders and business owners across India are buzzing with excitement over the latest GST reforms. These next-generation changes promise to boost purchasing power, slash prices on essential items, and give the economy a major lift—just in time for the festive season.

Many are giving a big thumbs-up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for rolling out these measures when people need them most. “It’s a smart move that puts real relief in the hands of everyday folks,” one shop owner shared.

Take S.K. Sarda, who runs a branded clothing store in New Delhi. He says the new GST framework fixes old headaches from multiple taxes and makes everything simpler. “The government has already pulled in nearly Rs 55 lakh crore through GST, fueling national development and defense,” Sarda explained. He predicts the reforms will inject Rs 2.5 lakh crore into the market, which could multiply three times as it circulates, creating a whopping Rs 7 lakh crore in turnover. “This will spark jobs and higher incomes in all sorts of sectors,” he added.

In the health world, the changes are a game-changer too. Ramesh Periwal, who owns a diagnostics business in Sikkim and leads the local Chemists Association, calls it a win for patients. “Medicines are way cheaper now—some hit zero tax, and others drop from 12 or 18 percent to just 5 percent,” he said. Hospitals will cut costs on key reagents and chemicals with lower taxes, passing savings straight to customers. Plus, Periwal sees a tourism boost for Sikkim, where hotel stays under Rs 7,500 now face reduced GST. “Tourism drives our economy here, and this will draw more visitors and supercharge the industry,” he noted.

Small business owner Vinay Chandra is relieved about zero GST on milk and other daily essentials. “Before, these faced 5 percent tax, but now they’re tax-free. It eases the burden on low-income families, trims kitchen costs, and helps tight household budgets,” Chandra said.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman got a firsthand look at the impact during a visit to Laxmi Nagar in New Delhi right after the reforms kicked in. She chatted with shopkeepers and customers, even on what was supposed to be a market holiday. “The feedback on these GST reforms is overwhelmingly positive,” Sitharaman told reporters. Shops are open, and owners are quickly sharing the price cuts with buyers.” She stressed that the Narendra Modi government’s steps bring real relief to people and traders alike, leaving everyone smiling about the changes.
