WFP warns hunger levels rising at alarming pace in Afghanistan

Kabul, Dec 8 (LatestNewsX) – The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a warning that hunger in Afghanistan is rising steeply as winter approaches.

By a statement released to Khaama Press, the WFP noted that levels of malnutrition among children and women may reach a severity “not seen in recent years.”

Executive Director Carl Skau explained that the agency has had to cut its food‑distribution program from 10 million people down to just two million because of a lack of funds. He cautioned that numerous children might confront life‑threatening shortages and could die from malnutrition and cold exposure during the coming months.

This message follows the United Nations’ earlier report that roughly 3.5 million Afghan children under five suffer from acute malnutrition.

Aid workers continue to describe Afghanistan as one of the world’s most food‑insecure countries, a status worsened by drought, an economic collapse and increasing restrictions on humanitarian assistance.

Donors have been urged by aid agencies to pause the halt in funding, warning that any further cutbacks risk dragging already vulnerable groups deeper into famine.

In November, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a separate alert about a growing threat of a measles outbreak. The agency urged parents to have their children under five vaccinated at local health centres.

According to Khaama Press, the WHO stressed that vaccination remains the best barrier against measles, which has already claimed several child lives in recent months.

The WHO also highlighted that malnutrition and limited medical access are compounding the outbreak, leaving many children exposed to diseases like measles.

Earlier that September, UN Secretary‑General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that WFP officials have warned of an escalating humanitarian crisis in 2025, and more than 4.7 million women and children need urgent malnutrition treatment, as reported by Tolo News.

Dujarric added, “Our colleagues at the World Food Programme warn that the country is facing a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in 2025. WFP pointed out that this year has seen the highest spike in acute malnutrition ever recorded, with more than 4.7 million women and children in need of urgent treatment.”
