Patiala House Court Rejects Accused’s Plea in Dhaula Kuan BMW Accident Case
In a key development in the Dhaula Kuan BMW accident case, the Patiala House Court in New Delhi made it clear on Friday that it won’t force the police to reveal details about the evidence they’ve collected. The fatal crash claimed the life of Navjot Singh, a Deputy Secretary in the Finance Ministry, and now the court is handling an application from the accused, Gaganpreet Kaur, to preserve crucial CCTV footage.
Judicial Magistrate First Class Ankit Garg heard arguments in the case. Gaganpreet Kaur’s lawyers argued that the Delhi Police haven’t confirmed if the saved CCTV footage actually captures the accident itself, not just the location. Advocate Pradeep Rana, along with Gagan Bhatnagar and Abhisek Rana, simply asked for a statement from the police assuring that the preserved clips include the incident.
The Delhi Police responded in court, saying they’ve already secured the CCTV footage from the accident spot. But the court stepped in and refused to make the police disclose whether the footage shows the exact moment of the crash. Instead, Judge Garg issued a notice to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Delhi Cantt Police Station. He wants to know if the saved footage includes clips from cameras at pillars 65 and 67, which could be vital for the BMW accident investigation.
The judge pointed out that earlier orders on September 18 already directed the preservation of CCTV footage. "The application has been allowed, and we’re just waiting for compliance," the court said. It added that the police can’t be pushed by the accused to explain the "veracity and contents" of their evidence at this stage.
This comes amid ongoing probes into the Dhaula Kuan accident, where the BMW hit and killed Navjot Singh. Gaganpreet Kaur’s bail plea is also up for hearing on Saturday, September 20, along with updates on the CCTV preservation. The next court date for compliance is set for September 20, 2025—wait, that seems like a far-off typo in records, but the immediate hearing is tomorrow.
