Security forces and Gadchiroli police in Maharashtra have taken down two Maoist memorials hidden deep in the forests of Mouza Kategaon and Marma. This bold move aims to bring more peace to the Naxal-hit region, where Maoist rebels have long stirred fear among locals.
The memorials, built about two to three years ago, served as symbols of Maoist control in these remote, rugged areas. Gadchiroli district remains a hotspot for Maoist activity, but recent anti-Maoist operations by local police have helped ease that terror for everyday people.
On September 30, a team from the Kategaon police outpost, joined by State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) members, swept through the dense forests. They uncovered the old structures and, with guidance from senior officers, had the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) check them out before fully demolishing the sites.
In a positive twist, police worked with nearby villagers to plant saplings right where the memorials stood. This act stands for hope, harmony, and a brighter future. Officers also urged residents to ignore Maoist propaganda and team up with police for village development, boosting a fresh feeling of safety in the community.
Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Neelotpal praised the effort, saying, “The Gadchiroli Police Force is committed to freeing citizens from the fear of Maoist terror.” He added a strong warning: “Such illegal Maoist structures have no place in society, and no one should participate in or support the construction of such memorials.”
The operation fell under the oversight of SP Neelotpal, Additional SP (Operations) M. Ramesh, Additional SP (Aheri) Satya Sai Karthik, Additional SP (Administration) Gokul Raj G., and Assistant SP (Dhanora) Aniket Hirde. On the ground, Police Sub-Inspector Ajay Bhosale from the Kategaon outpost led the charge, alongside PSI Kunal Bharti from SRPF Group 11 and other officers.
This comes just weeks after a September 17 encounter in Gadchiroli, where police killed two women Naxalites, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb Maoist influence in the area.
