India’s Union Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh announced plans for an Investors and Exporters Meet in Lakshadweep this November. The event aims to attract investment and boost exports in key areas like tuna fisheries, seaweed cultivation, and ornamental fisheries.

Singh shared these details during a meeting in Kochi focused on strengthening the fisheries sector in the islands. He pushed for building a full tuna value chain and launching entrepreneurship programs in seaweed and ornamental fisheries to create new opportunities for locals.

To ensure sustainable practices, Singh called for strong certification and traceability systems for exports. This will help protect the environment while opening doors to global markets.

Lakshadweep holds a prime spot, covering nearly 20% of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. This gives the islands access to rich deep-sea resources, including high-value tuna. Singh also praised the region’s eco-friendly fishing methods, like pole-and-line and handline techniques, which are recognized worldwide.

Boosting fish catches here could supercharge Lakshadweep’s economy and contribute to India’s overall growth. Singh linked this to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat vision for a developed India by 2047.

To speed things up, he proposed a joint working group between the central government and Lakshadweep administration to tackle pending proposals quickly.

Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy George Kurian highlighted how fisheries ranks as India’s second fastest-growing sector after IT. He urged more policy focus to align it with Atmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local, and Swadeshi goals, promoting self-reliance.

Kurian stressed investing in modern infrastructure, cold chain systems, and value-added processing. These steps would empower local fishers and strengthen the India fisheries sector.

Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel echoed the need for training on vessel technology and fish processing. He also called for a clear outreach plan to spread awareness about government schemes, drawing in more stakeholders.
