India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared an upbeat message with the Indian community in Morocco, highlighting how the country’s global standing has soared. Speaking during his two-day official visit to Rabat on Sunday, Singh noted that India’s voice now commands real attention on the world stage.
“You can sense the rise in India’s stature before the international community,” Singh told the gathering. “Earlier, when India spoke at global forums, it wasn’t taken as seriously as it deserved. Today, the whole world listens. Despite tough geopolitical and economic challenges, India stands as one of the fastest-growing major economies.”
Singh also spotlighted India’s boom as a hub for startups and innovation, a key driver in the nation’s growth story. He pointed out that the number of startups in India jumped from just 500 in 2014 to over 160,000 today. Unicorns—those billion-dollar startups—have grown even more impressively, from 18 back then to 118 now.
Turning to social progress, Singh praised the government’s push for women’s empowerment. He mentioned the new Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which reserves 33% of seats for women in India’s Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and state assemblies. “If you want to come back from Morocco to India and run for elections, you’re now entitled to that reservation,” he said. He added that Parliament has expanded its seats to support this change.
The visit aims to boost India-Morocco ties, especially in defence and strategy. Singh plans to meet his counterpart, Abdeltif Loudiyi, for talks that could lead to stronger bilateral cooperation. The two nations are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence collaboration, marking a fresh chapter in their partnership.
This trip makes history as the first by an Indian Defence Minister to Morocco. Singh arrived at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, where local military officials and Indian Ambassador Sanjay Rana greeted him. A large crowd from the Indian diaspora, including leaders from the Indian Association, turned out to welcome him warmly.
