Mumbai, India—Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stepped up on Tuesday to promise quick relief for families hit hard by floods in the Marathwada region. With heavy rains causing widespread damage, Shinde stressed that state ministers and officials are working closely with local district teams and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units to tackle the crisis.
Farmers in Marathwada have taken the biggest hit, losing crops to the relentless flooding. Shinde made it clear that the Maharashtra government is fully committed to helping them right away. “I’m staying in touch with all district officials and the NDRF rescue teams,” he said. “Farmers have faced major losses, and right now, supporting them is our top priority. Our Chief Minister and ministers will visit the area in person to check things out. We want people to get immediate aid. The government has always backed farmers during tough times like this, and we’ll aim to cover those losses before Diwali.”
This comes on the heels of a big move from the Maharashtra government earlier today. Officials announced a whopping Rs 1,339 crore assistance package for farmers whose crops got wrecked by heavy rains from June to August this year. According to sources, assessments—or panchnamas—for those earlier damages are already complete, and farmers are receiving the funds.
For the ongoing Marathwada floods, though, panchnamas haven’t started yet. The government plans to send the money straight to farmers’ bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), making it fast and hassle-free.
A government notice spells out the rules: These funds won’t overlap with other relief for this season’s crop damage. Instead, help will come at the set rates, all in one go per season. Once distributed, districts will post the full list of beneficiaries and details on their websites for everyone to see.
As Maharashtra battles these floods, the focus stays on getting aid to those who need it most, especially farmers rebuilding after the rains.
