China-India relations “overwhelmingly defined by friendly cooperation”: Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong

Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong highlighted the strong foundation of friendly cooperation in China-India relations during a reception marking the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Speaking in New Delhi, he noted that even with some challenges over the past 75 years of diplomatic ties, the bond between the two nations has mostly thrived on mutual support and collaboration.

Xu pointed to a recent meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin as a big step forward. “This successful encounter has lifted China-India relations to a new level,” he said, adding that both sides are eager to build on the leaders’ shared vision for steady and positive progress.

Outlining key areas to focus on for better bilateral ties, Xu stressed four main priorities. First, keeping a big-picture strategic view. As ancient civilizations and major developing powers, China and India play a crucial role not just in each other’s stories but on the global stage.

Second, boosting friendly exchanges and economic ties. China-India trade is booming, with goods trade jumping 10.4% year-on-year to $102 billion from January to August. Xu also shared good news on people-to-people connections: China has restarted the pilgrimage program for Indian visitors to sacred sites in Tibet, allowing over 700 official pilgrims and nearly 20,000 private ones to make the journey this year. Plus, Chinese missions in India have issued more than 265,000 visas to Indian citizens by September 22, opening doors for deeper interactions across all levels.

Third, ramping up dialogue to handle differences. Xu urged not letting old issues like the border question overshadow the bigger picture or slow down overall cooperation. “Dialogue has always been the key to moving forward,” he said.

Fourth, teaming up on global issues. Drawing from their shared history of fighting for independence 80 years ago, Xu called for opposing bullying, power plays, and trade wars. Together, China and India should champion the interests of the Global South and work toward a shared future for humanity.

Xu wove in China’s impressive strides over the past 76 years under the Communist Party’s leadership. The country has transformed from standing tall to growing prosperous and now strengthening on all fronts through modernization. In the first half of this year, China’s economy grew 5.3%, outpacing expectations and fueling about 30% of global growth. Innovations in green energy and advanced manufacturing are leading the way—think Chinese electric vehicles powering millions of homes worldwide.

On poverty, China lifted nearly 100 million rural residents out of poverty in the last decade, beating the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goals by 10 years. Opening up continues strong, with over 30,000 new foreign-invested firms setting up shop in the first half of 2025, a 11.7% increase. Big trade fairs like the China International Fair for Trade in Services, Canton Fair, and China International Import Expo keep drawing global partners.

In multilateral efforts, Xu praised China’s role in world peace and development. Just recently, China hosted its biggest and most productive Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin. Leaders from 23 countries, including Prime Minister Modi, and reps from 10 international groups came together to push cooperation and growth. At the event, President Xi launched the Global Governance Initiative, pushing for equal sovereignty, respect for international law, true multilateralism, people-first policies, and real action to fix global challenges—offering fresh ideas from China.

Wrapping up, Xu used a farming metaphor fitting the season: With the monsoon fading, it’s time for the busy sowing period ahead. “Let’s join hands, work hard, and harvest more from our friendship—bringing real benefits to our peoples and nations,” he said. To the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, and to enduring China-India friendship and cooperation!
