Global leaders arrive at UN Headquarters for 80th UNGA High-Level Debate focused on Peace and Development

World leaders gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday for the high-level debate of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa joined European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron as they arrived to take part in the discussions.

The 80th UNGA session kicked off on September 9, bringing together global figures to tackle major issues like peace, development, and human rights. The high-level debate began on September 23, and more than 150 heads of state and government plan to speak before it wraps up on September 29. This year’s theme, “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” highlights the need for international teamwork on today’s challenges.

Other big names showed up too, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Zelenskyy was even spotted heading out after his session.

On the sidelines of the UNGA, several European countries made headlines by recognizing a Palestinian state. France, Belgium, Monaco, Luxembourg, and Malta announced their decision on Monday, building on moves by Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal the day before. These steps aim to push for more stability in the Middle East.

Von der Leyen used her UNGA address to stress Europe’s strong backing for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. “We will set up a Palestine Donor Group,” she said, “because any future Palestinian state must be viable from an economic point of view. And we Europeans will set up a dedicated instrument for Gaza reconstruction. Gaza must be rebuilt.”

She added that in tough times, the world should stick to the two-state solution as its guide. Europe has supported the Palestinian Authority since the war started, but von der Leyen called for everyone to step up. “This is why we will set up a Palestine donor group,” she explained. She also made it clear that lasting peace requires a secure Israel, a strong Palestinian state, and an end to groups like Hamas.
