Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has greenlit a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for the Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana. This initiative focuses on building organized urban transport networks and climate-resilient roads across the state’s municipal corporations, all while pushing for sustainable infrastructure.
The state government has set aside Rs 200 crore in the budget to help urban local bodies develop these green ring roads in cities. The main goal? Connect different parts of urban areas without funneling traffic right into the busy city centers. Instead, these ring roads will divert vehicles around the outskirts, easing congestion.
The scheme goes beyond basics—it tackles rising traffic issues head-on with smart technologies for diversion, control, and management. Under Patel’s leadership, experts formed an advisory committee, led by the Principal Secretary, to craft the SOP. Their recommendations highlight using cutting-edge green and clean construction methods and materials to make the roads as eco-friendly as possible.
These green ring roads aren’t just functional; they aim to create tough, low-maintenance setups that boost city aesthetics and eco-values. The SOP covers everything from carriageways and medians to shoulders, drainage systems, rainwater harvesting, road utilities, tree planting, traffic control, and safety features.
In cities rolling out these projects, officials must prioritize at least 25% recycled materials in construction. This move cuts down on fresh resource use and supports a circular economy. Municipal corporations also get advice to maximize renewable energy in powering these ring roads.
Given the project’s big scope, implementation will follow strict government guidelines and the SOP, with regular technical and environmental checks on detailed project reports (DPRs). This ties into Patel’s vision for Urban Development Year 2025, aiming to build smart, sustainable cities through innovative, climate-resilient road networks in Gujarat.
