Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned Thursday that her country faces a “hybrid war” from a wave of mysterious drone sightings over key airports and military sites. She described it as part of a growing threat pattern hitting Europe, telling broadcaster DR, “This is a new security challenge, and it’s not going away anytime soon.”
The latest scares happened late Wednesday, with large drones spotted above Aalborg Airport, Esbjerg Airport, Sonderborg Airport, the Skrydstrup military air base, and a base in Holstebro. Police and defense officials confirmed the reports, sparking quick action to secure the areas.
Earlier this week, on Monday evening, Copenhagen’s busy Kastrup Airport shut down for about four hours due to drone activity. That disruption stranded around 20,000 passengers, turning travel plans upside down.
The trouble didn’t stop at Denmark’s borders. In neighboring Norway, Oslo’s Gardermoen Airport closed around midnight Monday after similar drone sightings, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
Danish authorities launched investigations to track down where these drones came from and who’s behind them. While some speculation points to possible Russian involvement amid rising tensions in Europe, defense officials stress there’s no solid evidence yet to back that up.
The Russian Embassy in Denmark pushed back hard, calling the rumors “absurd” in a statement to DR. “Russia has nothing to do with these drone flights,” they said firmly.
As drone threats in Denmark and Europe grab headlines, officials urge calm while working to boost security around airports and military spots.
