In Guwahati, Assam, the Chatribari Sarbajanik Debopujasthan Samity is bringing a fresh twist to this year’s Durga Puja celebrations. They’ve chosen a patriotic theme centered on the Indian Army to honor the brave soldiers and their sacrifices for the nation.
Visitors stepping into the massive pandal will see a stunning idol of Goddess Durga at the center. Surrounding it, large cutouts of fighter jets and submarines line the side walls, giving a real sense of military pride. You’ll also spot life-like statues of Indian Army personnel in full uniforms, holding weapons, standing tall inside the setup.
The organizers haven’t stopped there. They’ve set aside a special area to pay tribute to popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. A heartfelt photo collage highlights his journey in the entertainment industry, keeping his spirit alive in fans’ hearts.
Devatu Basu, a member of the Durga Puja organizing committee, shared with that the group has been hosting these events since 1954, always with unique themes. “We’ve organized the puja since 1954, and we’re all about sending a strong message,” Basu said. “Last year, we went with a library theme, and this time it’s the Indian Army. Plus, we’re honoring Zubeen Garg because he lives on with us in our hearts.”
Durga Puja, also called Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is one of India’s biggest Hindu festivals. It celebrates Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura in Hindu mythology. Devotees believe the goddess visits Earth during this time to bless her followers.
This year, the festivities kick off on September 28 with Shashthi and wrap up on October 2 for Vijayadashami. If you’re in Guwahati, this Indian Army-themed pandal offers a perfect mix of devotion and patriotism during the Assam Durga Puja season.
