China’s rising tennis star Zheng Qinwen powered through her second-round match at the 2025 China Open, defeating Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-2 in women’s singles on Saturday. This win marked Zheng’s exciting return to the court after skipping several big tournaments, including the US Open, due to right elbow surgery in July.
The 22-year-old Olympic champion, seeded seventh, got a first-round bye and wasted no time shaking off any rust. She kicked things off with a sharp ace and grabbed the first set comfortably. In the second, Zheng took full control, rarely letting Arango find her rhythm, to wrap up the victory and advance to the third round.
“I’m about 80% recovered, but that last 20% will be the toughest,” Zheng said after the match. “I’m excited to build on this and step up my game in the next one.” Up next for her is Czech player Linda Noskova in a battle for a spot in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, world No. 2 Iga Swiatek from Poland started her China Open campaign on a high note, crushing local hope Yuan Yue 6-0, 6-3. The 24-year-old extended her perfect streak at Beijing’s National Tennis Centre, where she won the title on her debut in 2023.
Swiatek dominated from the baseline in the first set, breaking Yuan’s serve three times to claim it without dropping a game. Yuan, ranked 58th and playing at home, fought back hard in the second, snagging an early break to lead 1-0. But Swiatek quickly turned the tide, winning three games in a row to pull ahead 3-1. Yuan saved some break points with gutsy defense and a slick drop shot that got the crowd roaring, but Swiatek stayed steady and closed it out with her powerful serves.
Swiatek’s having a stellar 2025 season, fresh off her Wimbledon triumph—where she beat Amanda Anisimova with two bagel sets—and a recent win at the Korea Open. The six-time Grand Slam winner is chasing a second China Open title in just her second try here, and she’s still unbeaten at the event. She’ll face Colombia’s Camila Osorio next, after Osorio upset 28th seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Earlier, fourth seed Mirra Andreeva breezed past China’s Zhu Lin 6-2, 6-2, keeping the momentum going for the top players at this key WTA 1000 tournament.
