Congress leader Supriya Shrinate expressed deep grief over the tragic Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu that claimed 36 lives on Saturday. She pointed fingers at leaders for the chaos but stressed that now is the time to support grieving families, not point blame.

“I’m heartbroken by this awful incident,” Shrinate told . “A massive crowd turned into a deadly stampede, killing over 36 people and injuring many others. My thoughts are with the families enduring this pain. Stampedes like this? Leaders bear responsibility. But right now, we need to stand by those who’ve lost loved ones.”

The disaster unfolded at a Vijay rally in Karur, where overcrowding sparked panic among the huge turnout. Attendees fainted in the crush, and several rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent care. Local sources blame the venue’s overcrowding for the heartbreaking outcome.

On Sunday evening, retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan arrived at Trichy airport to head a one-member Commission of Inquiry set up by the Tamil Nadu government. She drove straight to Karur and told reporters, “This commission aims to fix the flaws that led here. We can’t let tragedies like the Karur stampede happen again—steps will follow to make sure of that.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin shared his sorrow in an emotional post on X, saying the families’ tears and cries have touched him deeply and lingered in his heart. He called it the “Karur tragedy” and announced immediate relief: Rs 10 lakh compensation for each family of the victims who died in the stampede, plus Rs 1 lakh aid for those receiving hospital treatment.
