Maha: District units to decide on alliance for civic polls, says Praful Patel

In Gondia, Maharashtra, NCP working president Praful Patel shared some insights on party strategy during a press conference on Monday. He made it clear that while the NDA and Mahayuti alliances will team up for Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, things look different for local body polls and civic elections.

Patel explained that NCP workers have their own dreams of contesting these local battles on their own terms. “Our party workers want to take part in local elections,” he said. “We’ve joined forces with NDA and Mahayuti for national and state polls, and we’ll keep doing that. But you can’t ally everywhere. So, we’ve told our local leaders to decide on alliances for the civic body elections.”

He stressed that the aspirations of grassroots workers will shape how the party approaches these local fights in Maharashtra. While BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP—all part of the ruling Mahayuti—had earlier talked about facing upcoming local polls together, Patel clarified that the NCP won’t force any alliance from the top down on its members.

Still, he highlighted strong teamwork among the parties. “Key leaders coordinate well and speak with one voice,” Patel noted. “That’s why, whether in the state or central government, everything runs smoothly without any hitches.”

This comes as opposition parties like Congress also plan to let their local units call the shots on alliances for Maharashtra’s local elections.

Patel also touched on the ongoing flood crisis gripping Maharashtra. He praised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, for visiting the hardest-hit areas, sending detailed reports to the central government, and seeking urgent aid. To show support, all NCP MLAs and MPs have donated one month’s salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for flood victims.
