Matthew Lillard “nervous” for fans to watch ‘Scream 7’

Matthew Lillard is buzzing with excitement and a touch of nerves about his return to the Scream franchise in the upcoming Scream 7. The 55-year-old actor, best known for playing the wild Stu Macher in the original 1996 slasher hit, shared his thoughts in a recent interview with People magazine.

Directed by franchise creator Kevin Williamson and written by Guy Busick (with a story by Busick and James Vanderbilt), Scream 7 picks up as the sequel to Scream VI from 2023. It’s the seventh movie in the beloved horror series that introduced the iconic Ghostface killer. Lillard joins a star-studded cast of returning favorites, including Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Roger L. Jackson voicing Ghostface, and David Arquette. New faces Isabel May and Joel McHale round out the lineup.

“I’m thrilled to be back,” Lillard said. But he’s honest about his worries too. “I’m nervous, because at this point in my life, the only thing I can do is sort of ruin how people consider Stu.” He even joked about a recent commercial he did for the Exact Sciences Cologuard test, which promotes colon cancer screenings. “Especially if I come back and I suck or I was lame,” he added with a laugh.

Despite the all-star reunion, Lillard admits the pressure is real. “I haven’t seen the movie yet. I don’t know if it works, but it’s a risk. And it’s a risk that I was excited to take.” He hopes fans embrace it: “At the same time, I’m nervous to see the outcome. I hope people like it.”

Looking ahead to the 30th anniversary of the original Scream next year—where Lillard’s character gets unmasked as one of the killers—he keeps things low-key. No big celebrations planned, he said.

Lillard has been hyping the film since a September 14 appearance at Silver Scream Con in Worcester, Massachusetts. “The movie’s fantastic, and I’m really excited for people to see it,” he told the crowd. “It’s not gonna ruin the franchise—that’s the good news.”

Scream 7 slashes into theaters on February 27, 2026, giving horror fans plenty to anticipate from this next chapter in the Ghostface saga.
