Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India’s cricket team and current president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, kicked off Durga Puja celebrations in style. On Tuesday, he visited the vibrant Babubagan Sarbojanin Durgatsava Committee pandal in South Kolkata to offer prayers during Maha Ashtami.
Ganguly wasn’t alone—his wife, renowned Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly, joined him for the festive outing. Speaking to , Dona beamed with excitement about the days ahead. “I wish everybody a very, very, very happy Puja!” she said. “Just pandal hopping, staying at home, a lot of friends are over… this is the plan. Puja comes every year, and we wait for it every year. We will see more pujas today and tomorrow.”

This beloved Hindu festival, also called Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, celebrates the goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu mythology, Durga descends to earth during this time to bless her devotees. In 2025, the festivities kick off on September 28 with Shashthi and wrap up on October 2 with Vijayadashami, marking a joyful end to the celebrations.
