Tamil Nadu ministers SM Nazar and CV Ganesan rushed to Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai on Wednesday to check on workers hurt in a tragic steel arch collapse at the Ennore Thermal Power Station construction site. The accident, which happened Tuesday, claimed the lives of nine migrant workers.

Ganesan, the state’s labour minister, told reporters that labourers from other states lost their lives in the Ennore incident. He shared that one worker from Jharkhand is receiving treatment at the hospital. Acting on orders from Chief Minister MK Stalin, the ministers inspected the site and gathered details about the Chennai construction accident.

Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each victim’s family. He also directed officials to help transport the bodies back to their home states. In a social media post, Stalin wrote that he was heartbroken by the loss of nine Assam workers during the #BHEL power plant extension work in Ennore. He added that he’s instructed the electricity minister and TANGEDCO chairman to visit the site right away and start relief efforts.

A worker at the Ennore Thermal Power Station site described the horrifying moment to the media. “I’m new here and don’t know the exact name of that part,” he said. “It was the middle connection. Suddenly, there was a loud noise, and that piece fell, pulling everything else down with it.” The collapse near Chennai turned deadly fast, killing nine and injuring others.

From Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stepped in to support the families. In an X post, he confirmed that nine migrant workers from his state died after falling at the Minjur construction site in Thiruvallur district, part of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station expansion. Four victims hailed from Karbi Anglong District, and five from Hojai District.

Sarma listed the names: Munna Kemprai, Sorbojit Thausen, Phaibit Fanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Suman Kharikap, Dimaraj Thousen, and Dipak Raijung. “We’re working closely with Tamil Nadu authorities to bring their mortal remains home as soon as possible,” he said, offering his deepest condolences to the families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his grief over the Tamil Nadu accident. The PM’s office posted on X that he’s saddened by the building collapse in Chennai and is praying for the injured workers’ quick recovery. Modi approved Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for each deceased worker’s next of kin and Rs 50,000 for those hurt in the Ennore mishap.
