Howrah police in West Bengal arrested two suspects on Wednesday in the shooting death of Bihar businessman Suresh Yadav, officials confirmed. The arrests came after officers reviewed CCTV footage from the crime scene.
The main shooter remains at large, but police launched a manhunt and conducted raids across several locations earlier today. A senior Howrah City Police officer noted that investigators are grilling the two men for details on the attack.
Sources say the attackers hailed from Bihar and targeted Yadav during his visit to Howrah. The 50-year-old businessman, originally from Gopalganj in Bihar, owned a flat in the area and made regular trips to West Bengal, especially for Durga Puja celebrations.
Police uncovered Yadav’s troubled past, including multiple criminal complaints in Bihar and a seven-year prison stint. Officers suspect his criminal history may have motivated the murder, which happened Tuesday night.
The shocking incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. on Banabihari Basu Lane in Howrah’s crowded Sandhya Bazar during the vibrant Durga Puja festival. Yadav was strolling when a group of youths on a bike sped up, fired several shots, and escaped. He collapsed immediately, sending panic through the festive streets.
Responders rushed Yadav to Howrah District Hospital in critical condition, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Police quickly secured the scene, collected CCTV evidence, and started questioning local witnesses.
Howrah Police Commissioner Praveen Kumar Tripathi highlighted Yadav’s Bihar connections, adding that his wife and family there are now facing questions as the probe deepens into this Durga Puja murder case.
