A tragic accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district claimed the lives of at least 11 people, including five girls and two boys, when a tractor trolley plunged into the Abna River on Thursday. The incident happened during a Durga idol immersion procession in the Pandhana area, turning a festive moment into heartbreak for families across the region.

Officials say 14 people were riding the overloaded trolley from Rajgarh panchayat for the murti visarjan ceremony. As they approached a water body, a guard warned them to stay back. But excited young people pushed forward, causing the vehicle to tip over and submerge. Rescuers pulled out three survivors, though one remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

Khandwa Collector Rishav Gupta shared details with reporters: “Around 25 people were at the site. The youth got too enthusiastic and ignored the warnings, leading to the trolley losing balance.” All 11 bodies have now been recovered after intense search efforts along the riverbank.

The victims, many of them children, highlight the dangers of crowded processions during festival seasons in India. Three injured people received treatment at Khandwa Medical College and District Hospital, where doctors are working to stabilize them.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed deep sorrow over the Madhya Pradesh accident, calling it “extremely tragic” alongside similar incidents in Khargone’s Jamli village and Ujjain’s Ingoria area. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he announced Rs 4 lakh in financial aid for each deceased person’s family and urged quick medical care for the injured. “I pray to Maa Durga for the recovery of those hurt and strength for the grieving families,” Yadav wrote in Hindi.

This Durga Puja tragedy in Khandwa serves as a stark reminder of road and water safety during immersions. Authorities continue to investigate to prevent future mishaps in Madhya Pradesh’s festival hotspots.
