On Sunday, President Donald Trump spoke at Naval Station Norfolk beside the aircraft‑carrier USS Harry S Truman. He said U.S. forces hit another ship off the coast of Venezuela that was allegedly carrying illegal drugs – a claim the administration describes as a hit on “cartel terrorists.” Trump called the Navy’s effort a “success” in the fight against drug trafficking.

He noted that a vessel was struck on Saturday (local time), and that the U.S. would keep pressing the problem. Trump warned that drug traffickers are “not coming in by sea any more,” and hinted that future action might target routes that force smuggler movement over land. The statement carried an implicit threat of further strikes inside Venezuelan territory, raising alarms about possible escalation.

While the U.S. government has not released independent verification, Al Jazeera reported that the attack killed four people on the boat. The incident took place in international waters, sparking concerns from other nations.

Russia responded sharply. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a phone call with Venezuelan counterpart Yvan Gil, condemned the strike on what he called a “boat allegedly carrying illegal drugs.” Lavrov warned that Washington’s actions could spark broader instability in the Caribbean. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated full support for Venezuela’s leadership and people in the current tense regional climate.

International observers say the U.S. continues to target drug‑trafficking vessels, but the exact details and broader implications remain unverified. The situation underscores how the Caribbean region continues to attract heavy political attention, amid fears that new tactics by drug cartels could reshape maritime security.
