Takaichi likely to appoint Motegi as Japan’s next Foreign Minister

Tokyo, Oct 6 – Japan’s new party chief, Sanae Takaichi, is moving quickly to shape her government before she takes the helm on Oct 15 as the country’s first female Prime Minister. Reports from Kyodo News say Takaichi will name former LDP Secretary‑General Toshimitsu Motegi as foreign minister. She will also put ex‑defence minister Minoru Kihara in the key role of Chief Cabinet Secretary.

Motegi was one of the main challengers in the LDP leadership race and brings a wealth of experience. The 69‑year‑old parliamentarian served as foreign minister from 2019‑2021, led the industry ministry, and helped negotiate a trade deal with the United States during President Donald Trump’s first term. Takaichi plans to give cabinet roles to the other three candidates who ran for the top job, easing factional tensions inside the ruling party.

The party’s vote to pick its new leader came against a backdrop of growing challenges. The LDP’s membership fell to roughly 915,600, a drop of more than 140,000 since the last election. It now must govern as a minority, heal internal divisions and restore public confidence. Hard‑hit issues such as sluggish growth, rising inflation and a weak yen have put the LDP under close scrutiny after two recent defeats.

Takaichi won the leadership contest with 185 votes, beating Shinjiro Shinjiro, who gathered 156 votes in a runoff after the first round failed to produce a majority. Her premiership will continue Shigeru Ishiba’s three‑year term, which ends in September 2027.

As Japan prepares for its first female Prime Minister, the new cabinet lineup will shape the country’s foreign policy, domestic reforms and its stance on regional security.
