Earthquake of magnitude 4.1 strikes Afghanistan

Afghanistan saw a 4.1‑magnitude earthquake late Sunday night, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed. The tremor hit at a depth of 180 km, far below the surface, which means the shaking felt on the ground was mild. According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the quake occurred at 20:12 IST on October 6, 2025, at latitude 36.64 N and longitude 70.88 E.

Just a month earlier, the region registered a smaller 3.9‑magnitude quake at a shallow depth of 10 km on September 28. Shallow earthquakes are usually more dangerous because their seismic waves have less distance to travel before reaching the surface, causing stronger shaking and higher chances of damage and casualties. The NCS said the 3.9 event was close to the surface, which could increase the risk of aftershocks.

On September 18, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, spoke at a UN Security Council briefing on Afghanistan. He reiterated India’s commitment to peace, stability, and development in the country. “India will focus on providing humanitarian aid and building local capacity,” the ambassador said. He also underlined the importance of international and regional cooperation and confirmed support for the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Ambassador Parvathaneni thanked Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary‑General’s Special Representative, for her briefing and reaffirmed India’s ongoing partnership with UNAMA to help the Afghan people. This statement comes amid growing concerns about Afghanistan’s security and humanitarian needs, especially following recent seismic activity.
