It was the lord who made me do it: Advocate who hurled shoe at CJI Gavai

In Delhi, the Supreme Court was rattled on Monday when lawyer Rakesh Kishore hurled a shoe at Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai. The dramatic act sparked a wave of reactions, and Kishore claimed the moment was an act of divine will, not his own.

Kishore told that the shoe throw was “made for me by the Lord.” “I didn’t act of my own accord,” he said. “Whatever the Lord made me do, I did.”

The lawyer said his frustration began with a public interest litigation (PIL) the CJI heard on September 16. He talked about a 7‑foot statue of Lord Vishnu in Khajuraho that was desecrated during an invasion. Kishore says he felt the CJI’s comment—“Tell your God to restore it if you are a devotee”—was insulting, and he views it as an injustice. He added that the court’s remark about “the country will not run with bulldozers” seemed to criticize state building projects, so he said he will stand against it.

Kishore also mentioned his recent suspension. The Bar Council, led by Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, sent him a letter last night. He says the process was rushed and “no notice or hearing was given.” Under the Advocates Act, a show‑cause notice and hearing with a disciplinary committee are usually required. Without those steps, he feels the decision is unfair and even “despotic.”

He declared that he will keep speaking up: “India will not tolerate an insult to Sanatan Dharma.” “If the Bar Council decides to ruin my career, so be it,” he added.

The shoe incident has drawn attention to justice proceedings, religious controversies, and the conduct of lawyers in the Supreme Court. As the case unfolds, the legal community and the public watch closely to see how justice will be served and what the future holds for Rakesh Kishore.
