A woman in Dallas was shot and killed in a PetSmart parking lot after a heated argument that began over a simple “thank you.”
Cecilia Simpson, 41, was shot multiple times outside the PetSmart store on Tuesday afternoon, about 1 p.m. Dallas police confirmed the incident and reported that Simpson was driving with her 11‑year‑old daughter at the time.
The tension started when Simpson held the door open for Keona Zachyua Hampton, 22, who was shopping at a nearby Five Below. According to an arrest affidavit and police statements, Simpson got upset because Hampton didn’t say “thank you.” She and her daughter then drove to the same plaza where PetSmart is located.
Once inside the PetSmart store, Simpson told staff that she was being followed by Hampton. The 22‑year‑old entered the store and began shouting at Simpson’s daughter. After being asked to leave, Hampton threw a bottle at the family car. A physical fight broke out when Hampton pulled out a handgun and fired three shots that hit Simpson.
Hampton was taken into custody during a traffic stop that evening. She admitted to an argument with Simpson but said she only used the gun when the confrontation turned physical. She is now charged with murder and is awaiting bail—no bail amount has been set yet.
Emergency responders arrived quickly. An ER nurse who witnessed the scene told reporters the confrontation started with the woman demanding a fight outside. She added that the mother and daughter tried to calm things down and even got in their car to leave, but the shooter refused and pulled the gun. The nurse performed CPR on Simpson until paramedics took over.
The incident has shocked the Dallas community and highlighted how a routine gesture can spark tragic violence. Police are still investigating the case.
