Congress MP and party general‑secretary for communications, Jairam Ramesh, fired a pointed rebuke at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 10, calling out the Indian leader’s recent praise of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Ramesh also accused Modi of failing to condemn the Gaza conflict and praising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Ramesh posted on X that Trump has been “consistent, insistent and persistent” in claiming he used trade and tariffs—what he calls a “brahmastra”—to halt India’s Operation Sindoor and help broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack. The congressman warned that Trump would soon “score a century” in his efforts.
The Indian premier spent the previous day talking with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and repeatedly lauding Trump, even as he engaged with Netanyahu, who has been blamed for the Gaza tragedy. Ramesh’s comment was a sharp reminder that Modi’s open support for Netanyahu is “shocking, shameful and morally atrocious,” especially in light of the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Modi himself welcomed the first phase of Trump’s Gaza peace plan, saying the deal “reflects the strong leadership” of Netanyahu and hopes that prisoner releases and expanded humanitarian aid will ease suffering and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.
Ramesh’s criticism comes amid growing scrutiny of India’s foreign policy alignment and the country’s stance on the Israel‑Gaza conflict. Critics argue that India’s close ties with the United States and Israel risk alienating Muslim-majority neighbors and aggravating regional tension.
With the G7 summit approaching and global attention on India’s role in the Indo‑Pacific, Ramesh’s calls for a more balanced approach press the government to clarify its position on trade sanctions, India‑Pakistan dialogue and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
