Govt to build ring road around Agartala to ease traffic congestion: Tripura CM Manik Saha

Tripura’s capital, Agartala, is getting a much‑needed facelift, says Chief Minister Manik Saha. The state’s top leader announced that a ring‑road will soon circle the city, easing the daily traffic grind for commuters and businesses. “Traffic congestion has become a real problem for our residents,” Saha told reporters as he cut the ribbon for a new, beautifully renovated lake at MBB College.

The riverbank makeover is part of the Agartala Smart City Scheme, backed by the Asian Development Bank. The lake is now a popular spot for morning walks, yoga, and family picnics, and visitors can even try water sports. The whole 2.5‑km track around the lake charges just ₹10 and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It’s a move that could also curb anti‑social activities by keeping the area lively and monitored.

Saha emphasized that his government is pushing for large‑scale development across Tripura. “The overall development of the state is one of the main goals of this government,” he said. The agenda includes satellite township projects in Agartala, Udaipur, and Dharmanagar, and new infrastructure under the Tripura Urban and Tourism Development Project.

The city’s Howrah River Bank Development Project, due for inaugural two months later, is already nearly finished. With an overall budget of ₹230 crore, the project is set to improve sewage systems, water supply, and roadwork for 12 municipal corporations.

In holding a MIS planned in partnership with the Tata Group, the Unity Mall project at Badharghat aims to create a “one district, one product” brand for local businesses. A five‑star hotel with about 100 rooms will be built at Pushpawant Palace, giving a huge boost to tourism and hospitality.

“The state government is working in the health sector, too,” Saha added. “It is a holistic approach that has nothing to do with politics.” The CM noted that the Smart City model, initiated well before his tenure, has already begun to transform Agartala and other parts of Tripura.

Dignitaries in attendance included Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumdar, advocate general Shaktimoy Chakraborty, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, East Zone Chairman Sukhmoy Saha, Urban Development Secretary Abhishek Singh, Agartala Smart City Limited CEO Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, and Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Chakma.

With ring‑road construction, new township plans, water‑front revitalization, and a focus on smart city technology, Tripura’s capital is gearing up for a cleaner, more connected future that welcomes both residents and tourists alike.
