In Mandangad, Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde praised Chief Justice of India BR Gavai during the opening of a new civil and criminal court on Sunday. Shinde described Gavai as a true heir to Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision, highlighting the judge’s humility, integrity and commitment to bringing justice to every corner of the country.
Shinde spoke at the Ratnagiri‑district courthouse unveiling, noting how Gavai’s efforts mirror Ambedkar’s goal of “justice for the last person.” He applauded the CJI for treating everyone with respect—calling people by name, speaking warmly, and staying resolute even in the face of minor provocations. “Having a son of Maharashtra as the Supreme Court’s chief judge is a great pride for us,” Shinde said.
The ceremony also coincided with honors for the workers who built the courthouse, a gesture Shinde said reflected the CJI’s dedication to ensuring legal access for ordinary people.
An earlier incident on Monday added urgency to Shinde’s remarks. A 71‑year‑old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, entered Supreme Court Room 1 and tried to throw an object at Justice Gavai. Security quickly arrested the man, who shouted a threat before being escorted out. The attack drew sharp condemnation from political leaders across the spectrum.
Key dignitaries attended the Mandangad event, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Chandrashekhar, Judge Makarand Karnik of the Kolhapur bench, State Industries Minister Uday Samant, Guardian Judge Madhav Jamdar, Home Minister Yogesh Kadam, Judge Vinod Jadhav, Civil Judge Amruta Joshi, Bar Council President Amol Sawant, Sangram Desai, and many others.
Shinde’s tribute underscores the importance of a judicial system that reaches the “last person” in society—an ideal championed by Ambedkar and now embodied by Justice Gavai. The incident with Rakesh Kishore serves as a reminder that protecting the Supreme Court’s leadership remains a priority for the nation.
