A medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was gang‑raped in Durgapur, West Bengal, on Friday, sparking a firestorm of anger across Odisha’s political spectrum. The victim was a second‑year student at a private medical college. After she left campus with a male friend for dinner, a gang of men on motorcycles stalked them, made lewd remarks, chased the friend away, and dragged the student into a forest area behind the campus. The attackers raped her, stole her mobile phone and threw it away. The student was found wounded by college staff, taken to a local hospital, and the police have confirmed she lives in Jaleswar.

Political leaders call for strict action

In Bhubaneswar, senior leaders from the BJD, Congress and BJP—Aswini Kumar Patra, Bhakta Charan Das and Pratap Chandra Sadangi—said the West Bengal government must act fast and punish those responsible. Patra said, “The culprits must face the harshest punishment, or society will suffer moral decline.” Das demanded the immediate arrest of all accused and promised the Odisha Mahila Congress would step in. Sadangi blasted West Bengal as a haven for anti‑social elements and urged the Odisha Chief Minister to pressure the state authorities for justice.

Investigation underway

West Bengal police have arrested four men in connection with the gang‑rape. They are being investigated thoroughly. The case has raised concerns about cross‑border safety and has drawn criticism from both state and national leaders, who fear the police in neighbouring states may be too soft on such offenders.

The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement and public awareness to protect students and women traveling across state lines. The investigation continues as authorities work to bring the accused to justice.
