A video from Sataria village in Damoh district went viral after a young man, Purushottam Kushwaha, appeared on camera washing another man’s feet and saying an apology. The clip was posted on social media on Saturday night and quickly sparked outrage and debate across the region.

The incident follows a previous video Purushottam recorded that showed a villager named Annu consuming and selling alcohol, which is banned by a local community‑led prohibition. Annu was filmed wearing a garland of shoes, a gesture that many villagers found disrespectful. After the post was shared, residents demanded an apology. Under community pressure, Purushottam deleted the video from Instagram. He was later asked to perform a traditional foot‑washing ritual and pay a fine of ₹5,100.

When the apology video reached a wider audience, a popular social media influencer reposted it, turning the matter into a national conversation. In response, the Damoh police acted quickly. Superintendent of Police Shrutkirti Somvanshi announced that an FIR has been filed against six people, including the two unknown parties in the video. While the police have kept the names of those booked under the FIR confidential, they confirmed that four individuals shown in the video were charged.

Police also said they are looking into whether the videos were altered with artificial intelligence or other digital tools to defame any party. The investigation is ongoing.

Amid the growing tension, the police have deployed regular patrols in Sataria to keep the peace. Senior officers have joined respected local leaders in meeting with residents to calm the situation and promote harmony.

The Kushwaha community has sent a memorandum urging swift arrests and the application of relevant sections of the IT Act to protect against defamation. As the story continues, both the village and the Damoh district police remain focused on restoring calm and maintaining law and order.
