In Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Lt. General K.T. Parnaik (Retd.) praised the Assam Rifles – a paramilitary force known as the “Sentinels of the North‑East” – for standing firm in the face of tough terrain, harsh weather and unseen threats.
Speaking at a colourful investiture ceremony in the Raj Bhavan’s Durbar Hall, the Governor highlighted the centuries‑old legacy of sacrifice, duty and courage that Assam Rifles embodies. He said the force not only guards the region but also touches the lives of remote communities with humanitarian work, schools, health clinics and disaster relief.
During the ceremony, the Governor handed out his Gold and Silver Medals to 21 personnel, including a female rifleman, for their bravery, resourcefulness and leadership in both security operations and outreach missions. His speech stressed that for people in the Northeast, the Assam Rifles are more than a military unit; they are a trusted family, “Friends of the Northeast.”
The awardees included Deputy Commandant Keshar Singh Bisht, Subedar Diwan Singh Mehra, Naib Subedar Mohan Singh, Naib Subedar Sarbeswar Saikia, Warrant Officer Brij Mohan, Havildar Letkhongam Kuki, and Rifleman Khang Phao Gosak. The Governor extolled their silent sacrifices and “indomitable spirit” that uphold national pride.
Lt. General Parnaik urged all Assam Rifles members to continue serving with honor, bravery, and compassion, remaining steadfast guardians of the people and pillars of faith in the region.
