West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose sent a detailed report to President Droupadi Murmu and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday, accusing the state authorities of a gang‑rape that left a Dalit medical student in Durgapur in shock. The report sparked a firestorm of criticism from opposition parties, who say the centre and governors act selectively when the state government is not led by the BJP.
Insiders at Raj Bhavan said the governor’s brief to the president lists his observations from a recent visit to Durgapur, during which he met the victim’s family. The full contents of the report have not been released yet.
Congress leader Udit Raj slammed the move, calling it “step‑motherly treatment” towards states ruled by the opposition. “Why hasn’t the same urgency been shown in Odisha, where two similar crimes were reported? The governor aged out for that state. Only when the opposition is in power do we see action, is that democracy?” he told .
MP Imran Masood agreed, adding that the same level of scrutiny should extend to other states. “If the West Bengal governor is this active, why not the governor in Uttar Pradesh or other BJP‑ruled states where crimes against women happen?” he said.
Surendra Rajput, a Congress spokesperson, warned that if governors in BJP‑led states had taken the same steps, the situation would be very different. He urged Anandiben Patel of Uttar Pradesh—whose state has the highest number of crimes against women, according to the National Crime Records Bureau—to file a report on this issue. He also called on the Haryana governor to address the suicide of an IPS officer and the Madhya Pradesh governor to raise the plight of farmers.
Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan joined the chorus of critics. He pointed out the lack of action from Uttar Pradesh’s governor in cases similar to the Durgapur rape, noting a recent gang‑rape in Lucknow where little was done. “The BJP is using its governors to target non‑BJP states,” he said. “The Union is ignoring crime in BJP‑ruled areas.”
The alleged gang‑rape took place the night of October 10. A second‑year medical student from Odisha, studying at a private college and hospital in Durgapur, was accused of being dragged into a nearby forested area after leaving the campus at about 8 p.m. to buy food. Preliminary reports confirm that she was assaulted and gang‑raped in that secluded spot.
